Leipzig educational infrastructure investments

Overview

Leipzig is executing a significant investment strategy focused on educational infrastructure and the modernization of school facilities. The city recently completed a 28.1 million euro renovation of the historic Petrischule and a climate-friendly expansion of the Oberschule im Park.

On August 21, 2025, the city officially inaugurated the new Großzschocher primary school. Mayor Vicki Felthaus emphasized that investing in educational infrastructure is a “vital signal of commitment to the city’s youth,” even during periods of tight municipal budgets.

Looking ahead, Leipzig’s broader strategy focuses on maintaining existing structures and securing the school network. The city plans to invest approximately 108 million euros in school construction by 2027 and 95 million euros by 2028. Upcoming milestones include the opening of the Dösner Weg community school and a new gymnasium at Oberschule Ratzelstraße in 2027, alongside planned renovations at the Astrid-Lindgren-Schule, Gundorf school, and Löbauer Straße in Schönefeld.

In addition to physical construction, the city is extending its media development plan to ensure reliable digital infrastructure for schools and after-school care centers. Following the expiration of the initial ‘DigitalPakt Schule’ at the end of 2024, authorities have moved toward ‘Digitalpakt 2.0’. To meet state requirements and mitigate IT security risks, Leipzig plans to invest 8.9 million euros in school digitalization in 2027 and 7.6 million euros in 2028, pending the availability of state funding regulations.
