Lidl seafood product quality and safety issues

Overview

Lidl’s seafood offerings have faced scrutiny regarding both sustainability and food safety. While independent consumer tests from Öko-Test gave high ratings to certain products, such as ‘Nixe’ tuna fillets and ‘Ocean Sea 15’ fish sticks, broader environmental concerns persist regarding the industry. Reports indicate that farmed salmon aquaculture faces challenges including escapes from Norwegian farms and parasite infections.

In October 2026, the focus shifted to immediate food safety risks when Lidl and its supplier, Danforel A/S, issued recalls for Nautica brand rainbow trout fillets due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. The recall initially targeted ‘Nautica Regenbogen Forellenfilets Natur’ and ‘Nautica Regenbogen Forellenfilets Pfeffer’ (125g packs) with an expiration date of October 20, 2026.

Subsequent updates expanded the scope of the recall to include products with use-by dates of October 31, 2026, November 1, 2026, and November 3, 2026. These affected items were distributed across several German states—including Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland—as well as Austria.

Danforel A/S warned that the bacteria can cause severe gastrointestinal illnesses and flu-like symptoms, noting that high-risk groups such as pregnant women, infants, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable to serious complications. Customers are advised not to consume the products and may return them to any Lidl store for a full refund, even without a receipt. Danforel A/S has clarified that other products from the supplier or the Nautica brand are not part of this specific recall.
