Los Angeles Rams kicker roster changes

Overview

Following a 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Los Angeles Rams released kicker Harrison Mevis. The decision followed a performance in which Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal and had a 48-yard attempt blocked by Gregory Rousseau. Head coach Sean McVay described the special teams performance as ‘not even close to good enough’ and noted that the trajectory of the blocked attempt did not appear aligned.

To replace Mevis, the Rams initially signed Blake Grupe, formerly of the New York Jets’ practice squad. Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone noted Grupe’s range and explosive ability as key assets. However, Grupe suffered a season-ending ACL tear during his debut against the Arizona Cardinals while attempting to tackle a kickoff returner. Following the injury, punter Ethan Evans handled kicking duties.

The Rams have since signed veteran free agent Brandon McManus to serve as the team’s kicker. A Super Bowl champion with 13 seasons of NFL experience, McManus secured the position after a workout alongside veteran Matt Prater. He is expected to kick in the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
