Overview
Law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles have conducted multiple large-scale operations to combat illegal street takeovers.
In early September, the Los Angeles Police Department launched ‘Operation Street Sweeper’ in South Los Angeles. Targeting a gathering of over 700 people, the operation utilized drone surveillance and more than 150 officers to secure the area. This action resulted in 69 arrests, 570 citations, the impoundment of 200 vehicles, and the recovery of seven firearms. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell characterized the events as criminal matters rather than “harmless entertainment.”
Following this, police—supported by the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department—intercepted a minibike takeover on the 6th Street Bridge. Acting on intelligence, the Street Racing Task Force implemented a plan to corner a group of more than 70 individuals to prevent dangerous maneuvers such as doughnuts and wheelies.
The operation involved participants ranging in age from 13 to 50. While many were juveniles, police noted that approximately half of those cited were adults. The intervention resulted in roughly 78 misdemeanor arrests and citations. Authorities impounded nearly 80 motorized vehicles, including minibikes, pocket bikes, dirt bikes, and e-bikes. Additionally, two vehicles were impounded for 30 days for allegedly aiding and abetting participants by helping to conceal items for minors. Local business leaders have expressed concern regarding the impact of these gatherings on nearby residents and businesses.
