Maiori-Minori tunnel project dispute

The Maiori-Minori tunnel project on the SS 163 highway has become a point of contention between national infrastructure authorities and local government.

Initially, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced plans to form a technical committee involving Anas, the Campania Region, and local municipalities. This committee was intended to address mobility issues on the Amalfi Coast and clarify the status of the tunnel project, which is in an advanced design stage but awaits environmental and administrative authorizations. The initiative is part of a broader safety and maintenance program for the SS 163 highway.

However, the Municipality of Maiori has formally expressed opposition to the ANAS NA286 tunnel variant. While the local administration supports the general goal of improving mobility and safety, it rejects the current design due to concerns regarding the geological fragility of the area. Specifically, officials cited the karst nature of the Torre Mezzacapo promontory and the Annunziata Cave, requesting more documentation on how the project might interfere with underground cavities.
