Marten de Roon transfer from Atalanta to AS Roma

Overview

Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon completed a permanent transfer from Atalanta to AS Roma, ending a decade-long tenure with the Bergamo club. The move allowed De Roon to reunite with former coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Upon his departure, De Roon expressed gratitude to the Bergamo community, stating, “Bergamo will always be my home.”

The transfer sparked significant controversy in Bergamo. An entrepreneur, Fabio Acquaroli, filmed himself burning a De Roon jersey on a barbecue to protest the move. The jersey had been acquired for 2,000 euros during a charity auction for the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital pediatric ward. The incident highlighted a divide among the fanbase regarding whether the transfer was a professional choice or a betrayal.

New details indicate the move followed tensions between the 35-year-old midfielder and Atalanta management. De Roon reportedly felt disrespected by sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, specifically regarding his potential use as a component in a transaction involving Bologna. Additionally, the player expressed disappointment over the lack of a formal farewell to Atalanta supporters.

At AS Roma, De Roon is establishing himself as a key tactical asset. Despite initial skepticism regarding his age, a recent half-hour appearance against Torino demonstrated his ability to provide midfield stability. Formerly known as an ‘equilibratore’ in Bergamo, he has transitioned into a more positional defensive playmaker. His tactical intelligence, composure, and spatial awareness allow him to act as a defensive director, offering significant depth to the Roma squad alongside Cristante.
