Media coverage and professional activities of Trinity Rodman

Overview

Trinity Rodman, a professional soccer player for the US Women’s National Team and the Washington Spirit, drew significant attention during the US Open in early September 2026.

While Rodman was noted for her presence at the tournament supporting her boyfriend, Ben Shelton, during his victory over Hubert Hurkacz, her appearance sparked controversy regarding media coverage. ESPN faced backlash from viewers after its broadcast identified her primarily as ‘Ben’s girlfriend & USWNT player’ and noted she was ‘also known as Ben Shelton’s girlfriend.’ Critics argued that the broadcast prioritized her personal relationship over her professional achievements, such as being an Olympic gold medalist and a prominent NWSL player.

Rodman’s presence at the tournament coincided with her professional commitments. Following a decisive play that helped the Washington Spirit secure a 1-0 win against Bay FC to end a winless streak, she played in a key NWSL match against Boston Legacy FC in Washington, D.C. Following that match, she attempted to travel to New York City to support Shelton during his first career major final against Alexander Zverev. Shelton ultimately lost the final to Zverev in four sets.

By October 2026, Rodman continued to balance her professional duties with supporting Shelton. She celebrated his 24th birthday on social media ahead of her international commitments with the USWNT. As the national team prepared for high-stakes friendlies against Spain in Washington, D.C., and Chester, Pennsylvania, Rodman noted the team’s focus on ball possession and managing aggressive pressure. She also expressed pride in Shelton’s achievement as the first Black American man to reach a U.S. Open singles final since 1972.
