Mercedes-Benz makes Kecskemét Europe's largest EV plant

Overview

Following the launch of low‑priced GLC 250/300 electric SUVs in June 2026 and the addition of the all‑electric GLB 350 4Matic and CLA EQ 250+ performance data in early July, Mercedes‑Benz announced a €1 billion expansion of its Kecskemét plant on 7 July. The plan introduced the compact “mini G” G‑Class on the MMA platform in electric and mild‑hybrid versions and aimed to lift capacity to 300‑400 k units annually, growing staff from roughly 3 000 to 7 500. The enlargement officially opened on 11 July, making the site the brand’s largest European factory and Hungary’s biggest automobile plant, employing about 5 000 workers with a target of up to 3 000 additional hires. New body‑shop, paint shop and a battery‑assembly line raised annual capacity to up to 400 000 vehicles; the plant already produced the A‑Class and GLB SUV, and the electric C‑Class was slated for addition. On 13 July, Prime Minister Péter Magyar, Economy Minister István Kapitány and Group CEO Ola Källenius attended the hand‑over of a second production unit. The €1 billion addition doubled capacity to 350‑400 000 vehicles per year, expanded the workforce to 9‑10 000, and enabled series production of the electric C‑Class. Political debate surfaced over credit for the project, with criticism of the government and the Kecskemét mayor asking the prime minister to stay away. The upgraded facility also incorporates a 27.4 MW solar farm and rooftop panels delivering a total of 42.3 MW, covering roughly a quarter of the plant’s electricity needs, while a new paint shop cuts energy use by 20 % and CO₂ emissions by about 80 %. Digital‑twin models built with NVIDIA’s Omniverse and AI‑based inspection systems are used to optimise production and ensure quality.
