Mersin student support and development initiatives

Overview

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has implemented various initiatives to support university students through professional development and social welfare services. Initial efforts focused on fostering collaboration between student communities and the professional sector. Through the ‘University Communities Meeting’, organized by the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Career Center in partnership with Google Developer Groups Mersin and the Entrepreneurial Human Resources Association, students met with leaders in business, technology, and entrepreneurship to develop joint projects and increase communication. Following these professional engagement efforts, the municipality expanded its social support framework. This includes providing housing, counseling via the MERCİ Student Counseling Center, and vocational training through MERCEK. To assist with living expenses, the city offers affordable meal services, low-cost transportation, and access to free facilities such as laundry cafes and libraries. Additionally, students can access part-time employment opportunities at Denizkızı cafes. Expanding its nutritional support, the municipality provides daily free lunches to approximately 3,000 students attending Education and Teaching Support Course Centers across 11 districts. Since the program began in 2022, a total of 486,548 meals have been distributed through 15 course centers. To ensure safety and nutrition, meals are prepared under the supervision of food engineers in kitchens located in Mersin center, Silifke, and Tarsus, then delivered in sterile packaging. Cem Karakuş, the Education Services Branch Manager, stated that these efforts aim to support cognitive development and address the practical challenges faced by students and families due to rising food costs. To further enhance academic environments, the municipality operates 17 reading rooms managed by the Department of Culture, Art, and Social Affairs. These facilities provide internet access, computers, and complimentary beverages to support students preparing for various exams. City center locations, such as the Adres, Güvenevler, and Neptün rooms, operate from 07:00 to 23:00.
