Overview

Mexican industrial activity continues to show divergent performance across sectors. While national industrial production rose 1.7% year-on-year by June 2026, a gap persists between industrial growth and manufacturing decline.

Construction production has demonstrated strength, growing 6.9% annually to reach 55,295.6 million pesos. This expansion is primarily driven by public works, with significant increases in Water, Irrigation, and Sanitation (+303.3%), Railway Works (+249.9%), and Electricity and Energy Generation (+81.9%). Conversely, Urbanization and Transport declined by 31.9%. In Veracruz, infrastructure projects are reversing previous negative trends. Regarding labor in construction, personnel occupation rose 0.9% annually, while real average wages increased by 2.2% annually.

Labor productivity in Mexico grew 1.7% annually in the second quarter of 2026, following stagnation in the first quarter. This growth was led by the primary sector (up 7% annually) and the tertiary sector (up 2% annually). The secondary sector saw a slight annual decline in productivity of 0.1%, with manufacturing establishments specifically seeing a quarterly decrease of 0.1%.

The manufacturing sector remains a point of concern; production volume fell 2.4% annually in June, and employment declined for the sixth consecutive month. Analysts attribute manufacturing difficulties to reduced dynamism in the United States economy, commercial uncertainty, and investment hesitation regarding the USMCA review. Additionally, Mexico’s global competitiveness ranking declined from 55 to 62 in 2026 due to institutional weaknesses and fiscal concerns.
