Mexican para-sports qualification processes
Overview
In August 2026, Mexico held various selection events and announcements for its para-sports national teams aimed at qualifying for major international competitions.
Early in the month, approximately 100 athletes participated in the second stage of the Mexican Para Powerlifting Circuit at the Centro Paralímpico Mexicano (CEPAMEX). This event served as a qualifier for the 2026 Parapan American Open Championship, the 2027 Lima Parapan Games, and the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
Later in the month, Mexico announced a six-member para-archery national team selected to compete in the 2026 Parapan American Championship in Lima, Peru, from October 21 to 25. The squad includes recurve men’s athletes Samuel Efrén Molina Núñez and Hernán Dario Garza Cuéllar, compound men’s athletes Omar Echeverría Espinoza and Gerardo Olegario Rodríguez Banda, and compound women’s athletes Lya Daniela Sánchez Taboada and Liliana Montiel Orozco. To prepare, the team will participate in the Santiago 2026 Hyundai World Archery Para Series in Chile. Technical director Juan René Serrano noted the selection process concluded at CEPAMEX.
Additionally, Mexican adaptive sports authorities have initiated strategic planning for the VIII Para Pan American Games in Lima 2027. Led by Miguel Ángel García Meza of the Mexican Paralympic Committee (COPAME) and Lenia Ruvalcaba Álvarez of CONADE, the effort aims to build a competitive delegation to surpass the nation’s 125-medal performance from Santiago 2023. This cycle focuses on rigorous selection, physical conditioning, and logistical coordination for equipment and transport to bridge the gap toward the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
