MOBI public transportation implementation in Quintana Roo
Overview
The Quintana Roo state government is implementing the Sistema de Movilidad del Bienestar Quintanarroense (MOBI) to modernize public transportation. In Cancún, the free trial period for Route 27 concluded in late September 2026, transitioning to a formal fare system. Standard urban fares are set at 15 pesos, while routes serving the Hotel Zone cost 18 pesos. Preferential rates are available for students and seniors, and travel is free for individuals with permanent disabilities. The system utilizes electronic payments, including the MOBI card, QR code e-tickets, and contactless bank cards. The expansion has included the addition of 100 new units in the Benito Juárez municipality, which has prompted debate regarding fare costs compared to traditional transport methods that charge 10 to 12 pesos. Beyond Cancún, the service is expanding to other areas, including special services for Expofer Chetumal 2026 and route adjustments in Calderitas to support local merchants. On October 16, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced the launch of Route 17 Leona Vicario, the first urban route of the MOBI system in Cancún. To mark the commencement of operations, the service will be free of charge from October 19 to October 26, with electronic payments beginning October 27. This 44.05-kilometer route is expected to serve 99 neighborhoods and benefit approximately 242,821 people. The system will feature transfer discounts: the first trip costs 15 pesos, the first transfer is 7.50 pesos, and the second transfer is free. Following the launch of Route 17 on October 19, the service faced initial criticism from commuters. Reports emerged of drivers refusing to allow passengers to board with bicycles, with some users alleging that drivers accelerated or closed doors abruptly when cyclists attempted to use designated stops.
