Moroccan C-130 modernization and new MRO center

Overview

L3Harris Technologies has commenced a multi-year modernization program for the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) C-130 Hercules transport fleet. The project, which originated from an agreement signed in July 2025, is being executed at the L3Harris facility in Waco, Texas.

Following the completion of inspections on the first aircraft in late August 2026, work has transitioned into active execution. This initial phase involves structural repairs, maintenance, and the installation of new backup instrument systems and digital engine parameter displays. The program is scheduled to continue through 2029 and includes the induction of a second aircraft in the third quarter of 2026, followed by a third aircraft slated for a comprehensive avionics overhaul and a fully digital cockpit.

In a parallel development to bolster domestic defense capabilities, Morocco is establishing Maintenance Aero Maroc (MAM), a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center near Casablanca. This tripartite joint venture between Sabena Engineering, Lockheed Martin, and MEDZ aims to advance industrial sovereignty by servicing the RMAF’s F-16 Fighting Falcon and C-130 Hercules fleets. The facility, spanning over 8,000 square meters in its initial phase, is projected to become operational in the second half of 2026. Beyond supporting national defense, the center is intended to eventually provide MRO services to other F-16 and C-130 operators across the Mediterranean region and beyond.
