Municipal activities in Nova Iguaçu
Overview
The municipality of Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, has initiated several local administrative and social initiatives. The city hall has launched a large-scale update of its property registry, aiming to recatalog approximately 400,000 dwellings by the end of 2027. Municipal Finance and Taxation Secretary Evandro Gonçalves stated the effort is intended to provide more accurate data for urban planning and public service delivery.
To support these administrative goals, the city is expanding its itinerant General Service and Ombudsman Center to the neighborhoods of Palhada, Vila Nova, and Metropolitano. Managed by the Municipal Secretariat of General Service and Ombudsman (SEMAGO), the program seeks to decentralize public administration. The mobile unit provides IPTU tax assistance—including registration, name transfers, and debt renegotiation—as well as ombudsman services for reporting issues like public lighting, pothole repairs, and sewage unblocking. This expansion follows a pilot phase in the Cerâmica, Alto da Posse, and Ouro Verde neighborhoods, where the unit performed 89 IPTU-related services.
In addition to administrative services, the city is focusing on youth development. The Casa da Juventude has opened registrations for 80 free workshop spots in DJing, dance, theater, and graffiti. Aimed at local youth aged 15 to 29 registered in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico), the program seeks to foster artistic development and social transformation in celebration of Brazil's Youth Day. This complements previous efforts by the City Council to promote dialogue regarding education, employment, and political participation for young citizens.
