Murder charge in death of Norfolk physician

Overview

An investigation continues following the death of Dr. Hannah Terry (also known as Dr. Hannah Cain), a 45-year-old general practitioner in Dersingham, Norfolk. Dr. Terry, a member of the Grimston Medical Centre, provided medical care to members of the British Royal Family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The King and Queen have been informed of her death.

Dr. Terry was found dead in an upstairs bedroom of her home near the Sandringham estate in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026, while hosting a children’s sleepover. Authorities reported that the victim was discovered unconscious and not breathing. A postmortem examination revealed a blunt force injury to the right side of her head and injuries suggestive of neck compression. Further details from the post-mortem indicate the cause of death involved traumatic brain injury and cervical contusions, with evidence suggesting the use of an axe followed by strangulation.

Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, has been charged with her murder. Prosecutors allege that Cain attempted to stage the scene as a botched robbery, initially reporting a confrontation with an intruder to the police. However, investigators determined the scene was staged. At the time of the incident, five children were present in the home, including the couple’s three children, aged 8, 11, and 13, and two guests; the children have since been placed in protective care.

Cain has appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court and remains in custody. A hearing has been scheduled for December 3 to allow for the review of further medical reports.
