Nagaland school education and digital reform

Overview

The Nagaland government has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of its state school system to improve educational quality, infrastructure, and enrollment. Initial reform plans involve the amalgamation or closure of low-enrollment institutions and the creation of composite schools to ensure educational continuity. To address technical subject shortages, the state intends to conduct emergency recruitment for mathematics, physics, and chemistry teachers, while also rationalizing staff deployment.

To modernize the curriculum, the government has entered a partnership with Google involving an investment of over Rs 10 crore. Announced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the Tech X Gaming Expo in Kohima, this collaboration focuses on integrating artificial intelligence, software development, data analytics, robotics, and game design to connect youth to global opportunities. Supporting infrastructure includes the proposed establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence and the Nagaland Innovation Hub for Startups at Chümoukedima.

Furthering these technological advancements, the state is collaborating with NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) for the AIM 2.0 Frontier Region Programme. This proposal includes establishing 93 Atal Tinkering Labs and two Atal Incubation Centres to strengthen entrepreneurship in remote and border regions. Additionally, the Nagaland Education Association, Nagaland University, and Alder College have conducted workshops in Kohima to train faculty on Artificial Intelligence and the SWAYAM platform, aiming to provide accessible, fee-free digital education to students and professionals.
