National Democratic Congress leadership contests

Overview

Internal political activity within Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified regarding upcoming leadership contests. A Global InfoAnalytics survey conducted in mid-September 2026 showed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson leading the 2028 flagbearer race with 32% support, a significant increase from 22% in July. During the same period, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s support declined to 23%.

As the chairmanship race expands, several prominent figures have entered the contest. Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu is campaigning on themes of “restoration, renewal, and reset,” and has specifically proposed a framework to reward grassroots members, such as branch organizers and polling station agents, based on competence rather than personal connections. Former Employment and Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashitey is promoting a vision for a more inclusive party. Additionally, National Chairman aspirant Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has called for the creation of a formal welfare and exit structure to provide financial and social support to former party stalwarts.

New bids for national roles include Abass Mustapha Osabutey, known as “The Capo,” who has declared his candidacy for Deputy National Organiser. Osabutey intends to prioritize strengthening branch structures through election trend analysis and data-driven planning.

Regional and constituency-level mobilization continues. In the Ashanti Region, current Regional Organiser Isham Alhassan Yaw Bonsu has officially announced his candidacy for Ashanti Regional Chairman, focusing on rebuilding the grassroots base. In the Upper East Region, supporters are advocating for the retention of Salifu Alukuba as the Regional Zongo Caucus Coordinator. In Ketu South, Deputy High Commissioner Bright Solomon Kumordzie has urged unity, while in Nabdam, John Adoku Abaah has pledged to strengthen youth networks.
