National Socialism remembrance programs in Germany

Overview

Germany continues to organize cultural, educational, and musical programs to commemorate the victims of National Socialism and address the historical legacy of the Nazi era.

Scheduled events for late 2026 include musical readings and lectures focused on personal and family histories. In Dahn, musician Kurt Tallert will present ‘Spur und Abweg’ on October 23 to mark the anniversary of the deportation of Jews to Gurs, exploring his family’s experiences in Theresienstadt. In Bad Kreuznach, a lecture series titled ‘Wir erinnern am …’ will continue in November. Historian Ive Schuster will discuss the Strauß family’s experiences with deportation and expropriation, while psychologist Theresa Weismüller will address the transgenerational transmission of trauma.

Other commemorative activities include a guided tour titled ‘Forgotten Destinies’ at the Bad Sobernheim heritage museum on November 8, 2026, to highlight the contributions of former Jewish citizens and remember the November Pogroms of 1938. In Berlin, a memorial walk is planned for November 9 in Baumschulenweg to mark the anniversary of the November Pogroms through visits to ‘Stolpersteine’ and interreligious dialogue. Additionally, a September 4 event in Berlin will honor victims of ‘Aktion T4’.

Film-based remembrance is also expanding. In Köpenick, a screening of the documentary ‘Wie konnte es dazu kommen? Hindenburg – Hitler und die nationalsozialistische Diktatur’ is set for November 27, 2026, to examine Paul von Hindenburg’s role in the rise of the Nazi regime. Furthermore, the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ) will host its third ‘Augen auf-Kinotag’ on January 27 and 28, 2027, providing pedagogically supported film programs for schools in cities such as Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Halle (Saale).
