Netflix release of ‘The Whisper Man’ film

Overview

Netflix released the crime thriller ‘The Whisper Man’ on August 28, 2026. An adaptation of Alex North’s 2019 novel, the film was directed by James Ashcroft and filmed on location in New Jersey to maintain a “grim and bleak tone”.

The plot centers on Tom, a widowed novelist who moves to a small town with his eight-year-old son, only to encounter disappearances that mirror the crimes of a local serial killer known as ‘The Whisper Man’. The story follows Tom as he seeks help from his estranged father, Pete Willis, a retired detective haunted by past failures in tracking the killer.

The ensemble cast features Robert De Niro as Pete Willis, Adam Scott as a nervous father, Michelle Monaghan as a local investigator, and Michael Keaton as the killer.

By mid-September 2026, the film became a major streaming phenomenon, reaching the number one spot in 69 countries and peaking at over 33 million views. While critical reception has been mixed, the production has been noted for its 1990s-style thriller atmosphere, prioritizing suspense and psychological tension over jump scares.

Recent reviews have highlighted the strong performances of the ensemble cast, specifically noting the work of De Niro and Keaton. However, some critics have argued that the adaptation attempts to “compress too much of the source material into a two-hour runtime”, which may lead to shallower character development for certain roles.
