New Delhi preparations for 2026 BRICS Summit

Overview

Preparations continue in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam. Following previous administrative reorganizations and high-level security reviews, the Delhi Traffic Police conducted major motorcade rehearsals on September 6. These rehearsals triggered extensive traffic diversions at 22 points, affecting more than 35 roads, including Mathura Road, Janpath, and Sardar Patel Marg. To accommodate VIP convoys and heads of state, authorities have announced regulated movement on over 35 roads, specifically highlighting Sardar Patel Marg, Mathura Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, and Akbar Road.

As the summit approaches, several major landmarks and administrative functions have been suspended. The Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum and Amrit Udyan are closed to the public, and the traditional Change of Guard Ceremony has been cancelled. Additionally, the Delhi Metro has closed its exhibition museum at the Supreme Court station.

Administrative and judicial adjustments have also been implemented. In addition to the previously declared school holidays, a holiday has been set for Central government offices on September 11. Judicial proceedings have been impacted, with the National Lok Adalat rescheduled from September 12 to October 10, and court cases originally listed for September 11 and 12 moved to September 14.

In tandem with security and traffic measures, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has intensified sanitation and beautification efforts. The summit has also caused a significant surge in the hospitality sector, with luxury hotel rates in the National Capital Region (NCR) rising from approximately Rs 18,000 to over Rs 80,000 per night. On September 10, Northern Railway announced significant disruptions to train services in Delhi from September 11 to 13, with approximately 26 trains cancelled.
