NFL QB injury trends and New York Giants roster updates

Overview

The 2026 NFL season has seen an unusual surge in quarterback injuries, with 38 different quarterbacks throwing at least five passes through the first two weeks—the highest number since 2001. Notable injuries include Sam Darnold (glute), Caleb Williams (hamstring), and Jayden Daniels (elbow dislocation). Former coach Bill Belichick suggested that “limited contact during practices may hinder the development of offensive linemen,” potentially increasing quarterback vulnerability.

Within the New York Giants organization, rookie starter Jaxson Dart has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the season following a significant knee injury sustained during a Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Dart sustained damage to his left medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and meniscus, requiring surgery with a recovery timeline of approximately four to six months.

Veteran Jameis Winston has taken over the starting role, leading the Giants to a 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans. While coach John Harbaugh indicated Winston would remain the starter for the time being, Winston’s performance has drawn scrutiny regarding his arm strength and accuracy. Some analysts have speculated that Winston may be playing through an undisclosed injury, noting that routine passes have frequently fallen short. Winston has pushed back against these criticisms, suggesting his recent style focuses on game management rather than high-volume passing.

To bolster depth, the Giants traded a 2027 fifth-round pick to acquire former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. The team continues to explore veteran options to support the position, including interest in players such as Jimmy Garoppolo, Brandon Allen, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Gardner Minshew.
