Nicaragua prepares to host 2026 U23 Baseball World Cup

Overview

Nicaragua is finalizing preparations to host the U23 Baseball World Cup from November 6 to 15, 2026. Following a technical evaluation by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), officials confirmed that facilities in Managua, León, and Masaya are largely ready. WBSC representative Paul Bernal inspected key venues, including the Estadio Nacional Soberanía, the Rigoberto López Pérez stadium, and the Roberto Clemente stadium, assessing playing fields, security, and media spaces.

Logistical arrangements for accommodation, transportation, and security are underway, supported by approximately 600 volunteers. The tournament is scheduled to open at the Estadio Nacional Soberanía with a match between Nicaragua and Australia, with the final set for November 15 at the same venue.

In preparation for the tournament, the Cuban Baseball Federation and Softball has announced a 45-player preliminary roster led by director Guillermo Carmona. The squad includes players with international experience, such as 22-year-old catcher Danell Figueroa, who has played in the Texas Rangers organization and the Frontier League. Cuba will compete in Group B against Great Britain, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, and Venezuela, while Nicaragua is in Group A with Australia, Czech Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Chinese Taipei.

Nicaraguan sports officials, including Daniel Sequeira, Co-director of the Instituto Nicaragüense de Deportes (IND), have noted that the country has strengthened its logistics and organizational expertise through hosting various championships. Other recent developments include Nicaragua securing 57 medals at the CODICADER Central American Secondary Student Games and the addition of the Dantos de Managua as a sixth franchise in the national professional baseball league for the 2026-2027 season.
