Nigeria digital infrastructure expansion
Overview
On 4 August 2026, the Nigerian Minister of Communications announced a 90,000-kilometre fibre-optic rollout under the Project BRIDGE programme, targeting nationwide coverage and expanding the national backbone to about 120-125 km by 2030. Simultaneously, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) signed a 15-year lease of its Digital Industrial Park and Learning Centre to the Enugu State Government, planning to redevelop the site as an Enugu Talent City and an Artificial Intelligence Institute.
On 7 August 2026, the NCC formally transferred the Digital Industrial Park and the Digital Bridge Institute to Enugu State in a ceremony attended by Governor Peter Mbah and NCC officials. During this event, the NCC issued a Cyber Resilience Framework requiring licensed telecom operators to allocate dedicated budgets for cybersecurity governance, risk assessments, technology, training, and incident response. Executive Commissioner Abraham Oshadami noted that “given the increasing digitalisation of services… the need for a robust, adaptive and inclusive cybersecurity framework has become more urgent.”
Furthering its digital expansion, Enugu State has entered a partnership with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to establish a Digital Fabrication Centre following land approval from Governor Mbah. This project aims to promote local manufacturing and innovation by upskilling artisans to international standards. The NCC noted that its partnership with Enugu State is intended to position the region as a competitive destination for technology-enabled services and business process outsourcing.
