Nissa Rugby Pro D2 promotion crisis

Entities: Nissa Rugby · Rugby Regulatory Authority · City of Nice · Eric Ciotti · Pro D2

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Nissa Rugby’s on‑field promotion to Pro D2 was jeopardised by a funding dispute with the Nice municipality. Club president Jean‑Baptiste Aldigé and association president Patrice Prévot resigned, and the French rugby regulator A2R demanded €4.6 million in guaranteed financing. The city offered €500,000, leaving a €2.1 million shortfall.

On 24 July the disciplinary council and A2R formally rejected the club’s promotion application, citing the missing €2.1 million and the municipality’s refusal to cover it. The decision, delivered by video conference, gave Nissa Rugby a 15‑day window to appeal and indicated that the opponent they had beaten, Mont‑de‑Marsan, could retain its Pro D2 place.

A further update on 31 July set the appeal for 4–5 August. Mayor Éric Ciotti confirmed the city has already provided €3.5 million in subsidies and infrastructure funding and cannot increase its contribution. The club still requires roughly €2 million to meet the regulator’s guarantee, with a total public backing of about €4.5 million proposed. Players have issued an open letter warning that loss of the licence would jeopardise contracts and the broader club community.
