Oaxaca social welfare programs for women

Overview

The government of Oaxaca, under Governor Salomón Jara Cruz, has implemented social welfare distributions targeting women heads of household through various programs.

In the Istmo de Tehuantepec region, the Tarjeta Margarita Maza program distributed 4,878,000 pesos to 813 women. Secretary of Welfare, Tequio, and Inclusion Vilma Martínez Cortés noted that 250 million pesos have been allocated to this program statewide for 2026 to support household economies.

Support was subsequently extended to the Valles Centrales region, benefiting over 1,600 women. This included the issuance of 854 Margarita Maza cards to heads of households in extreme poverty, providing 6,000 pesos semiannually. The Tandas Mujer Primavera program in this region distributed 822 microcredits, totaling an investment of 5.615 million pesos at zero percent interest.

Expansion of these initiatives continued into the Costa region, specifically in San Pedro Pochutla. An investment of more than 7 million pesos was utilized to support over 1,000 women through the ‘Tandas Mujer Primavera Créditos a la Palabra’ and ‘Tarjetas Margarita Maza’ programs. In this region, the Margarita Maza card strategy benefited 610 women. The Tandas Mujer Primavera program provided microcredits to 543 women in amounts of 5,000 pesos and 67 women with expanded credits of 10,000 pesos. These credits feature zero percent interest and include a one-month grace period.
