Observance of the 26th Pope John Paul II Day in Poland

Overview

The 26th Pope John Paul II Day was observed across Poland on October 11, 2026, under the theme ‘St. John Paul II: Disciple-Missionary’. Established in 2000 by the Polish Episcopal Conference, the annual event commemorates the late Pope’s life and mission, focusing this year on Christian testimony within modern society and the digital age.

National commemorations included televised masses from major sites, such as the Sanctuary of St. John Paul II in Krakow, and a gala concert on TVP1. Local participation involved religious processions, rosary prayers, and the sale of traditional ‘papal cream cakes’ (kremówki papieskie). In Trzciana, the community marked the occasion by dedicating a new monument featuring a figure of Saint John Paul II and a stone rosary.

A central component of the observance was the collection of funds for the New Millennium Work Foundation (Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia), which provides scholarships to talented youth from small towns and disadvantaged families. In Krakow, Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś presided over a Holy Mass at the St. John Paul II Sanctuary, emphasizing that the initiative aims to support students who possess a desire to learn but lack the necessary financial means.

In Przemyśl, Father Waldemar Janiga led celebrations at the Archcathedral Basilica. During his homily, he reflected on the late Pope’s dual role as disciple and missionary, stressing the necessity for Poland to cultivate educated, upright, and honest citizens.
