Ohrid Summer Festival chamber music concerts

Entities: Ohrid Summer Festival · Hermes Quartet · French Embassy in North Macedonia · Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova · Simon Popovski

Overview

The 66th Ohrid Summer Festival in North Macedonia continued its chamber‑music program through early August 2026. After the Italian trio Kimera opened the series on 16 July and a Slovak quartet performed on 22 July, the French Hermes Quartet gave a well‑received concert on 30 July in the historic St. Sofia church, an event attended by President Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova and supported by the French Embassy and French Institute.

On 2 August the festival presented “Internal voice of the cello and violin,” featuring the National University Chamber Orchestra of Bitola, Austrian cellist Emil Rovner, Macedonian violinist Simon Popovski and Canadian composer‑conductor Eugenij Shcherbakov. The program included several of Shcherbakov’s works—such as “Fantasy on a Korean Theme,” “Jewish Caprice,” and “In Memory of Goce Kolarovski”—as well as an arrangement of Gershwin’s “Three Preludes” and Popovski’s own “Fantasy on Macedonian Motifs.” Audience enthusiasm reinforced the festival’s goal of showcasing Macedonian talent alongside international artists and deepening cultural exchange in the region.
