Oral health initiatives and training in Brazil
Overview
Oral health awareness and specialized dental services continue to expand in Brazil through national initiatives and local prevention programs. The Brazilian Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization, has opened registrations for the ‘Mostra Nacional Brasil Sorridente’ (National Oral Health Showcase) to encourage research on innovation, technology, and equity within the Unified Health System (SUS). Selected projects from this showcase are slated for presentation at regional meetings in cities including Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Belém, Campo Grande, and Natal.
Local efforts include specialized training in Ubatuba for oncology and ASD patients, and oral cancer detection campaigns in Maringá during its 29th Oral Health Week. Mobile dental units have also expanded access, such as the ‘Agora Tem Especialistas’ pilot in Maringá and the ‘Cuidar e Sorrir’ unit in Altinópolis, which supports women in vulnerable social situations.
Recent campaigns have intensified preventive education. In Patos de Minas, the Vamos Sorrir clinic is offering free evaluations and cleanings throughout October. On a larger scale, the ‘Um Sorriso do Tamanho do Brasil’ program, a collaboration between Colgate and the Brazilian Association of Dentistry (ABO), aims to reach over 100,000 children in more than 85 cities through educational activities and hygiene kit distribution. Additionally, the São Paulo Municipal Health Secretariat is conducting the fifth ‘Virada Odontológica,’ featuring hundreds of activities including lectures and supervised brushing to celebrate National Dentist Day and promote care for seniors and those with chronic diseases.
