Orlando Bloom and Mara sisters spark debate over film scene

Overview

Following his recognition at the Venice Film Festival, British actor Orlando Bloom arrived in San Sebastián to present Werner Herzog’s film, ‘Bucking Fastard’. The film, which stars Kate Mara, Rooney Mara, and Domhnall Gleeson, explores the connection between twin sisters and is loosely based on the lives of identical twins Freda and Greta Chaplin.

During his appearance at the festival, Bloom discussed the importance of maintaining a connection to everyday life to sustain his craft. He is also scheduled to present the Donostia Award to director Werner Herzog in honor of his extensive cinematic career.

While presenting the project, Bloom, who plays Gareth Mulroney, discussed the filming of an intimate scene involving the Mara sisters. He described the sequence as a ‘very sincere sort of moment’ built collaboratively by the performers, highlighting the vulnerability of his character and the ‘innocence’ of the twins. Herzog noted that he chose to step back during the sequence to allow the actors to manage the intimacy, resulting in a scene with ‘charm and depth.’ Herzog further noted that it is unprecedented in cinema for two sisters to interpret a single character's shared history in this manner.

The film has sparked significant online debate and polarized reactions. The controversy centers on a sexual trio scene involving Bloom and the Mara sisters, who play characters Jean and Joan Holbrooke. While some viewers on platforms like Reddit and X have criticized the premise as ‘disturbing,’ ‘weird,’ or ‘unethical’—questioning the decision of real-life siblings to film such a scene—others have defended the sequence as a professional artistic choice by consenting adults within a work of fiction.
