Ottawa Senators Brady Tkachuk trade and leadership shift

Overview

The Ottawa Senators have entered a rebuilding phase following the trade of captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. Tkachuk, who served as the Senators’ captain for eight years and recorded 463 points in 572 games, reportedly requested the move to seek better opportunities to contend for the Stanley Cup. In exchange, the Panthers acquired the 26-year-old forward for two 2026 first-round picks, a conditional 2029 first-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick.

Tkachuk joined his brother, Matthew Tkachuk, in Florida. The Panthers also added goaltender Jacob Markstrom, Akira Schmid, veteran Lars Eller, and defenseman Radko Gudas following the departure of Sergei Bobrovsky to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Addressing the move at the NHL-NHLPA North American Player Media Tour, Tkachuk described it as a ‘difficult and emotional decision.’ He denied rumors of conspiracies, peer pressure, or anti-Canadian bias, stating the decision was ‘businesslike’ and motivated by the chance to play with his brother. The departure caused friction in Ottawa; defenseman Thomas Chabot expressed disappointment regarding the loss of a leader following a recent playoff qualification.

In the wake of the leadership vacancy, the Senators named defenseman Thomas Chabot as team captain for the 2026-27 NHL season. Chabot, the franchise’s longest-tenured player, becomes the 11th player in team history to hold the role. He will be supported by alternate captains Claude Giroux, Jake Sanderson, and Tim Stützle. General manager Steve Staios stated that Chabot exemplifies the organization’s values through his commitment to the team and the city.
