Oura health technology company expansion and IPO
Overview
Finnish health technology company Oura is advancing toward a potential United States initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq under the ticker OURA. Following an S-1 registration statement filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company is seeking a valuation between $11 billion and $16 billion, with reports suggesting a potential capital raise of up to $3 billion.
Financial filings reveal significant growth, with revenue for the nine months ending June 30 reaching approximately $1.21 billion, a 74% increase year-over-year. While hardware sales accounted for $974 million (80%) of revenue, subscription services are a rapidly growing segment, contributing $240.5 million. The company reported selling 3.6 million rings in the last 12 months and has grown its base to approximately 5 million paying subscribers. Net income for the nine-month period rose to $60.8 million, up from $1.6 million a year prior.
Despite this momentum, Oura faces several risks. The company noted that battery performance issues in certain Oura Ring 4 units contributed to $84.4 million in warranty expenses. Additionally, Oura faces a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging it overstated the accuracy of its sleep-tracking capabilities.
Market competition is also intensifying. Competitors such as Ultrahuman are developing rings with advanced processors and AI capabilities, while Circular is working on models featuring NFC contactless payments and FDA-cleared ECG functionality. Ultrahuman has also recently navigated patent disputes involving Oura in the United States.
