Peloponnese road safety infrastructure projects

Overview

The Peloponnese region has undertaken significant infrastructure investments to improve road safety and mitigate geological hazards. Initial efforts included a 1 million euro contract for rockfall protection on the Tripoli–Pyrgos National Road at the Lagadia section.

This localized work is part of a much larger 45 million euro road safety project funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility. Targeting over 600 locations, the initiative is entering its final stages. In the Argolida regional unit, completed or near-complete works include 162,500 square meters of road surface restoration, 27,400 square meters of new markings, 52 kilometers of vehicle containment systems, 2,560 new signs, and 3,500 plastic delineators. Governor Dimitris Ptochos has described this as the “largest road safety intervention ever implemented in the region.”

Complementing these large-scale efforts, a new €580,000 contract has been signed for the maintenance and safety improvement of the 8th Provincial Road between Messinia, Avramiou, and Kefalovryso. Governor Ptochos noted that such interventions are part of a broader regional plan to systematically upgrade the provincial road network to enhance citizen safety.

Expanding on this regional plan, the Peloponnese Regional Committee recently approved 1.45 million euros for six additional intervention projects in Arcadia and Laconia. In Arcadia, 950,000 euros are allocated for maintenance across the municipalities of North Kynouria, South Kynouria, Gordynia, and Tripoli. Furthermore, 300,000 euros have been designated for the immediate restoration and construction of a bypass on the Megalopolis – Isari – Basta provincial road to address ground subsidence. In Laconia, 200,000 euros were approved for road maintenance works in the Pellas municipal unit.
