Pernambuco cultural heritage celebrations 2026

Overview

In late July 2026, Pernambuco honored two key cultural figures: the renowned ceramic artist Mestre Vitalino, whose work put Caruaru on the map for popular pottery, and the music collective Coco Fulô do Barro, which marked its tenth anniversary with new releases and performances celebrating the regional Samba de Coco tradition. A week later, in early August, the state continued its cultural program by showcasing the legacy of its cinema and dance. A national film circuit presented landmark Pernambuco movies across dozens of theatres, while a free videodance event in Recife commemorated the 25th anniversary of the dance company Cia. Etc., featuring video works and public debates. The state’s audiovisual focus expanded with the announcement of the 16th Animage International Animation Festival, scheduled for November in Recife, which will feature 116 short films and ten feature films from 108 countries. By mid-August, the state government launched the 19th Pernambuco Cultural Heritage Week to facilitate discussions on regional identity and the safeguarding of cultural references. This event, running from August 17 to 21, coincides with ongoing local efforts to support artists through the National Aldir Blanc Policy (PNAB). In Pesqueira, the municipal government has extended its support for local cultural production by opening in-person registrations for the PNAB 2026 – Fazedores de Cultura program, which remains open through August 31. The Pernambuco Meu País Festival concluded its third edition in Caruaru at the end of August, marking the end of its tour through ten cities. The festival, which honors figures such as Mestre Vitalino, Irineu do Mestre, and Janete Costa, is expected to attract over 120,000 visitors and generate approximately R$ 19.2 million in Caruaru. Programming included the ‘Olhares Afogadenses’ film showcase, featuring short films from Afogados da Ingazeira, and a closing event at the Pátio de Eventos Luiz Gonzaga.
