Perseid meteor shower events in Turkey

Overview

In early August 2026, several Turkish municipalities organized public viewing festivals for the annual Perseid meteor shower. On 8 August, the Karacabey district of Bursa hosted its sixth Perseid observation event at Yeniköy Beach, drawing more than 25,000 enthusiasts. The program integrated meteor watching with environmental awareness, featuring workshops on climate change and zero waste. On 12 August, the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality scheduled a free visual festival at the Erciyes ski resort’s Hacılar Gate, offering professional astronomer talks and telescope sessions.

As the shower reached its peak between 12 and 13 August, observation conditions were highly favorable due to low moonlight. In Kayseri, thousands gathered at the Erciyes Mountain summit, while approximately 7,000 people attended a festival at Topuklu Plateau in Denizli’s Beyağaç district. Other notable observation points included Bolu, Kastamonu, Nevşehir, and Istanbul.

On 13 August, Ankara University hosted a ‘Science Cafe’ at the Kreiken Observatory. Simultaneously, Beylikdüzü Municipality organized the ‘SMART SPACE: Perseid Meteor Shower and Space Observation’ program at the Aziz Sancar Science and Art Center. This event provided informative presentations on meteor shower formation and celestial movement, telescope observations of planets, a planetarium experience, and a drone show.

The event, caused by Earth passing through debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, coincided with a rare week of astronomical events, including a total solar eclipse visible in parts of Europe and North America, though the eclipse was not visible from Turkey.
