Philadelphia police officer ambush and investigation fallout
Overview
In early October 2026, Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber was killed and Officer Hector Rodriguez III was seriously wounded during an ambush in West Philadelphia. The incident occurred while officers responded to a report of an armed individual on North 52nd Street. Seiber, a 10-year veteran and U.S. Air Force veteran, died after being shot three times. Rodriguez, a nine-year veteran, survived multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities arrested Eric Lewis, a 35-year-old Philadelphia Water Department employee, following a standoff. Lewis faces 76 charges, including murder and the homicide of a law enforcement officer. Arrest reports indicate Lewis allegedly stated the shooting was racially motivated. Investigators stated that Lewis allegedly fired at a total of 11 officers before being taken into custody by SWAT units. Three firearms linked to the shooting have been recovered. Additionally, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has indicted Lewis on federal charges.
On October 24, Rodriguez was released from the hospital following significant improvement in his condition. During funeral services for Seiber, held on October 20, he was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. Mayor Cherelle Parker announced plans to establish an annual public-service internship program in his honor.
The incident has triggered a significant dispute between District Attorney Larry Krasner and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel regarding the 2023 acquittal of Lewis on prior charges. Krasner accused the Commissioner’s inner circle of spreading misinformation and defended his office by calling the 2019 investigation into Lewis “one of the worst investigations” he has seen in 40 years. Krasner alleged that “arguably criminal” conduct by former Officer Naeem Crawley and Homicide Detective Laura Harris—specifically the provision of false information—devastated the original prosecution.
