Plovdiv 2026 cultural festivals

Overview

In late summer 2026, Plovdiv staged a series of high‑profile cultural events as part of its European Capital of Culture programme. The city opened the 13th International Photo Salon on 15 August, an open‑air exhibition at the Roman Stadium that displayed more than 140 top photographs selected from 4,424 submissions by participants from 41 countries. An international jury awarded top honors to photographers from India, Austria and Bulgaria, including the top award for best author to Abhishek Basak from India. A youth competition also highlighted emerging talent. A week later, on 1 September, Plovdiv launched the 22nd Autumn Salon of Arts at the Ancient Theatre. The multidisciplinary festival featured music, theatre, dance, literature and visual arts, including the premiere of the monodrama “The Last Escape of Don Juan”. The city’s cultural programming continues into the autumn with the 12th edition of the Cinelibri festival, scheduled from 15 October to 8 November 2026. Spanning eight Bulgarian cities including Plovdiv, Sofia, and Varna, the festival will explore the theme ‘Civilization of the Spectacle’, inspired by Mario Vargas Llosa and Guy Debord. The program is expected to feature over 70 films, including literary adaptations and premieres from major international film festivals. Other ongoing and upcoming events include the Kapana Gallery exhibition, ‘Art and Discussion: The Regional Art Exhibition in Plovdiv since 1958’, which runs through 30 September 2026. Additionally, the International Photography Meetings festival is scheduled for 16–18 October 2026, with exhibitions continuing until 31 October. This festival marks a leadership transition to the ‘New Photographic Environment Foundation’. Further expanding the autumn schedule is the 32nd Week of Contemporary Art, curated by Emil Mirazchiev.
