Poland school inequality
Overview
Continuing analysis links widening gaps in Polish primary education to the influx of immigrant children and the 2016 abolition of the gimnazjum system, which removed a mixed‑ability transitional year and limited rural mobility. Schools have lowered entry thresholds while extended‑level exams demand increasingly complex, interpretive answers, prompting families to rely on private tutoring. A CBOS poll shows about 80 % of parents allocate money for extra lessons, with 34 % paying for tutoring; average monthly fees are around 950 zł per child and exceed 2 000 zł for intensive exam preparation.
The tutoring market is now saturated: all slots for the 2026/27 year were filled before the summer break, and parents are pre‑booking at higher fees. Hourly rates have risen to roughly 72 zł, reaching 100 zł for advanced subjects such as mathematics, programming and music. This shortage deepens inequality, as only affluent families can sustain the extra support.
Teachers receive a net vacation allowance of about 2 590 zł (gross 2 943 zł) automatically at the end of August, but class‑tutor stipends remain low at a statutory minimum of 300 zł gross per month. A temporary compensation benefit for teachers hired to teach Ukrainian refugees will end on 31 August 2026, forcing about 9 200 beneficiaries to resign or lose the monthly 4 475 zł payment.
Meanwhile, the Gmina Kutno is investing nearly 300 000 zł in summer upgrades—thermal modernisation, drainage, toilet refurbishments and a new secretariat—to improve learning conditions for the September term.
