Police shooting of Glenn Pysher in Pennsylvania

Overview

Glenn “Bubba” Pysher IV, a 22-year-old college baseball player, was fatally shot by police in Upper Pottsgrove Township, Pennsylvania, during an early morning encounter at a residence on Snyder Road.

The incident occurred after Pysher mistakenly approached the wrong home, believing it was a friend’s residence following a night of drinking. Residents reported a possible attempted break-in, prompting a response from the Upper Pottsgrove Township Police Department. Officers encountered Pysher at the rear of the property and discharged their weapons, striking him twice.

Pysher’s family maintains that he was unarmed, carrying only a cellphone and a backpack containing clothing and beer. His parents, Glen and Erin Pysher, stated that he had been celebrating a friend’s birthday and accidentally took a wrong turn in the woods. His father noted that Pysher was on a FaceTime call with friends just minutes before the shooting occurred.

Following an investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, which included a review of body-worn camera footage, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele announced charges against Upper Pottsgrove Police Corporal Sean Farrell, 58. Farrell faces a charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the August 23 incident.

New details from the investigation indicate that body camera footage shows Pysher raising his hands and walking toward the officer after being ordered to the ground. While Farrell initially claimed Pysher charged at him while screaming, prosecutors stated the video evidence does not support that description. Prosecutors asserted that Farrell had “less-than-lethal options” and did not need to use deadly force, noting the shots were fired while Pysher was approximately 17 to 20 feet away.
