Polish adaptations of Lalka

Overview

Discussions regarding adaptations of Bolesław Prus’s novel ‘Lalka’ have emerged within the Polish film industry. Actor Daniel Olbrychski criticized a recent Netflix adaptation directed by Paweł Maślona, describing the production as ‘not a good film’ and labeling the director’s approach as ‘insolence’ for prioritizing style over the original story. Marek Kondrat has also joined the criticism of the Netflix series, stating it fails to meet the ‘intellectual standards’ of the original work by simplifying the source material.

On September 28, the film adaptation directed by Maciej Kawalski premiered at the Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa in Warsaw. The event drew a large gathering of Polish celebrities and politicians, including Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski. The production marks the return of Marek Kondrat to the screen as Ignacy Rzecki after a nearly twenty-year hiatus, alongside stars Marcin Dorociński and Kamila Urzędowska. While the film has received international praise, domestic reactions remain mixed.

Following its official cinematic release, actor Marcin Dorociński, who portrays Stanisław Wokulski, expressed gratitude for working with Kondrat, noting that the veteran actor’s presence was ‘essential’ to his portrayal of the lead character. The production’s historical authenticity is further highlighted by its costume design by Katarzyna Lewińska and Tomasz Ossoliński. The Gniezno-based company Polanex produced over 200 period-accurate shirts, adapting to 19th-century cuts and proportions for the film.
