Polish local celebrations of long-term marriage

Overview

Local municipalities across Poland continue to hold ceremonies to honor couples celebrating significant marriage anniversaries, such as 50, 60, and 65 years. These celebrations often include thanksgiving masses and the presentation of the Medal for Long-term Marital Cohabitation, a state distinction awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland.

While these medals serve as a significant honor to recognize the role of long-married couples in the social fabric of their communities, the distinction does not include financial benefits. A recent Senate proposal to introduce one-time cash payments for various marriage anniversaries—ranging from 5,000 PLN to 8,000 PLN—was rejected by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Family and Social Policy.

Recent local events illustrate these ongoing traditions. In Chełm, a ceremony at the ‘Trzy Dęby’ inn recognized couples for their long-term commitment, with Mayor Wiesław Kociuba and municipal council members presenting awards. In Świdnica, ten couples were celebrated during a ceremony organized by the Civil Registry Office, where Mayor Bartłomiej Strózik and Dorota Kruźlak presented Presidential medals. In Włodawa, Mayor Wiesław Muszyński presided over a ceremony honoring ten couples celebrating 51 and 52 years of marriage.

Regarding the administration of these honors, the President's Chancellery reported efforts to address a significant backlog of medal applications. While reorganization has reduced the backlog by 40,000, thousands of applications remain pending due to a high volume of marriages from the 1970s. Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the President's Chancellery, noted that the budget for these awards remains stable at 6.7 million PLN, with expectations to mitigate delays by next year.
