Implementation of Polish school nutrition reforms

Overview

As of September 1, 2026, the Polish Ministry of Health’s nutritional reforms for schools and kindergartens have officially come into effect. These regulations aim to combat childhood obesity by promoting a “planetary diet” and limiting sugar, salt, and fats in catering, school shops, and vending machines.

For facilities providing three meals a day, new mandates include serving fish at least once a week, providing at least one full-value meal based on legumes weekly, and restricting fried foods to a maximum of two portions per week. To ensure consistency across institutions, meat alternatives must now be available daily, with at least one entirely plant-based menu offered per week. This shift supports students following plant-based diets and acknowledges the nutritional adequacy of well-composed plant diets for all ages.

In school shops and vending machines, products must now be free from added sugars, sweeteners, and salt. Permitted items are restricted to bread, dairy or plant-based alternatives, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids. Compliance with these standards will be monitored by the State Sanitary Inspection (Sanepid).

The reforms have faced criticism from parents concerned about schools “overstepping their boundaries into parental roles” regarding lunchbox contents, while administrators have noted logistical challenges and potential cost increases. These nutritional changes coincide with the ‘Reforma26. Kompas Jutra’ educational reform, which introduces a new curriculum, a ban on smartphone use in primary schools, and mandatory health education.
