Regional road infrastructure rehabilitation projects
Overview
Infrastructure development and road rehabilitation efforts are underway across several regions to improve connectivity and resilience.
In Zimbabwe, rehabilitation of the 440km Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road has resumed full-scale operations through eight contractors under a public-private partnership. Following Senate concerns regarding construction slowdowns, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona confirmed that contractors, each responsible for approximately 51km, are expected to accelerate work on this segment of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls corridor.
In Malawi, the rehabilitation of the Magomero turn-off to Namadzi River Road has been completed under Phase Two of the Regional Climate Resilience Programme. Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri stated the improved route will boost economic activity for farmers near the Mbulumbudzi Market and facilitate access to the historic grave site of Dr. David Livingstone.
In Madagascar, work has resumed on National Road 4 (RN4) between Berivotra and the Boanamary junction. To comply with World Bank contract requirements prohibiting limestone, technicians are sourcing granite from the Betsiboka region and basaltic stones from Marovoay, with major works expected to conclude by late November. Additionally, the 43.9km ‘cocoa road’ in the Ambanja district has reached the provisional reception stage. Funded by the World Bank, this project aims to reduce transport costs for cocoa and vanilla.
In Haiti, the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications is performing maintenance, drainage, and reshaping operations on various routes, including National Road 2 (RN2) in Petit-Goâve and the Boutilliers road. However, significant degradation remains on National Road 1 (RN1) and within the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.
