Severe weather and storm alerts across South America
Overview
Severe weather systems continue to impact South America, with expanding alerts and ongoing infrastructure damage. In Argentina, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has extended orange alerts to include Entre Ríos, San Luis, and La Pampa, alongside existing alerts for the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), Córdoba, and Santa Fe. In Santa Fe, warnings for the southern part of the province, including Rosario, have been upgraded to an orange alert, predicting severe storms with wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h and rainfall between 50 and 90 mm. On October 31, the SMN elevated warnings for southern Santa Fe, forecasting severe storms for November 1 in areas including Rosario, Constitución, and San Lorenzo. In Córdoba, intense hail and storms have impacted Agua de Oro, Alta Gracia, and the Altas Cumbres region, causing traffic disruptions in the capital. A yellow alert remains for much of the province as storms move from west to east. In Entre Ríos, seven departments, including Gualeguay, Victoria, and Gualeguaychú, are under yellow alerts for storms, hail, and intense electrical activity. Other parts of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, San Luis, and San Juan also face unstable weather. As of October 31, the SMN has maintained orange alerts for parts of Córdoba, northern La Pampa, and southern Santa Fe, warning of hail, frequent electrical activity, and wind gusts over 90 km/h. Yellow alerts extend to Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, San Luis, Mendoza, Formosa, and Misiones. In Córdoba, intense hail has been reported in Agua de Oro, Anisacate, and Alta Gracia. In northern Patagonia, a severe hailstorm in Valle Azul destroyed Packham’s pear crops, while strong winds in Choele Choel caused structural damage, including collapsed walls and blown-off roofs, and resulted in one injury from a falling tree.
