Release and promotion of Giovanni Veronesi film ‘Dio ride’

Overview

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded with the screening of ‘Dio Ride’, directed by Giovanni Veronesi, as its non-competitive closing film. Following the festival, the film was presented at Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati in Florence. The production, which was filmed over six weeks across Tuscan provinces including Pisa, Siena, and Pistoia, received a 250,000 euro contribution from the Tuscany Region’s 2024 Cinema and Audiovisual Grant.

As part of the promotional rollout, Veronesi is hosting several special previews across Italy ahead of the film’s wide theatrical release via Piperfilm on October 29, 2026. In the Veneto region, events include a meeting at Cineplex Moderno in Due Carrare on October 1, and a screening and discussion at Cinema Kappadue in Verona on October 2, moderated by Alberto Rizzi.

Further activities include a premiere at Multicinema Arca in Spoltore on October 7, where Veronesi will meet the audience. Special screenings are also scheduled at Cinema Gabbiano in Senigallia and Masetti Cinema in Fano, featuring live video connections with Veronesi and star Pierfrancesco Favino from Lucca.

Set in the 17th century during a plague outbreak, the film stars Favino as Fra Leopoldo da Casamacchia, a Capuchin friar who uses humor to spread a joyful version of the Gospel. This approach triggers an inquisitorial process led by Cardinal Vincenzo Maculani, played by Silvio Orlando, under the direction of Pope Innocent X. The cast also features Maurizio Lombardi, Carlo Cecchi, and Paolo Rossi.
