River Plate coaching uncertainty and qualification struggle
Overview
Following the departure of Eduardo Coudet, interim manager Leonardo Ponzio led River Plate through a period of competitive stability in September 2026. During the eighth round of the Torneo Clausura, River Plate defeated Independiente Rivadavia 3-1 at the Monumental, with goals from Gonzalo Montiel and a brace from Tomás Galván. This victory extended the team's unbeaten streak to four matches and moved them to ninth place in Zone B.
In mid-September, the squad maintained momentum with a 1-0 friendly win against Estudiantes de Buenos Aires, featuring a goal by Rafael Santos Borré. During this period, midfielders Tomás Galván and Tobías Andrada returned to training following physical discomfort.
By mid-October, following a 1-1 draw against Sarmiento de Junín, speculation intensified regarding Ponzio’s future as the club’s playoff prospects dimmed. The match against Sarmiento was preceded by security incidents at the stadium involving overcrowding and technical failures, which led to police using pepper spray and batons to disperse crowds.
Despite a 3-0 victory against Belgrano in Córdoba that moved the club to seventh in the annual table, River Plate faces a difficult path toward 2027 Copa Libertadores qualification, with a 13% mathematical probability. The club is also navigating potential roster changes and rumors regarding Ramón Díaz, who denied being contacted by management but expressed a desire to return, stating he “rejected a great opportunity at Corinthians waiting for an opportunity at River when it comes.” Upcoming high-stakes matches against Racing and Boca Juniors remain critical for continental eligibility.
