Romania law-enforcement crackdown and drug interception
Overview
In late July 2026, Romanian authorities conducted significant operations targeting organized crime and violent offenses. On 27 July, four individuals were placed in preventive detention for alleged cocaine trafficking in Bucharest, Ilfov, and Dolj counties. On 29 July, a series of nationwide arrests addressed diverse criminal activities, including drug possession, sexual assault, robbery, and child pornography. By August 2026, law enforcement intensified efforts to secure summer festivals. Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu reported that specialized canine teams and organized crime units are intercepting substances using sophisticated concealment methods, such as drugs dissolved in liquids and stored in containers mimicking nasal decongestant sprays. Seizures have included cannabis, cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, 3-CMC, NEP, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and various synthetic substances, alongside distribution equipment. During the same period, DIICOT and specialized police units dismantled large-scale organized trafficking networks. One operation involving 16 search warrants across Timișoara, Satu Mare, Oradea, Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Maramureș, and Mehedinți uncovered a pyramidal criminal group established in September 2023. This group allegedly used international transport companies and heavy goods vehicles with hidden compartments to smuggle hundreds of kilograms of cannabis resin and cocaine from Spain to European destinations, reportedly acting on orders from Albanian traffickers. On 23 August 2026, details emerged regarding the scale of this dismantled network. Authorities reported the seizure of approximately 1.7 tons of drugs, with an estimated wholesale value of 9.6 million euros and a retail value reaching 25 million euros. The group, which expanded from a core of five suspects to include ten additional members and four companies used as legal covers, allegedly provided transport services for Albanian drug traffickers. The leader of the organization is a Romanian citizen previously identified by Europol as a ‘High Value Target’.
