Romanian security and crime prevention initiatives

Romania has initiated several domestic and international efforts to enhance public safety and combat crime. Domestically, police departments across multiple counties launched ‘Crime Prevention Week’ from September 21 to 25, 2026, to focus on community education and reducing victimization.

In Argeș, sessions for hundreds of students addressed online safety, cyberbullying, and substance abuse, while Bihor hosted activities for nearly 700 people regarding road safety and minor victimization. In Vrancea, the ‘Beyond Appearances’ project facilitates dialogues between inmates and students to illustrate the consequences of antisocial behavior. Other regional efforts include school perimeter security in Vrancea and domestic violence awareness in Hunedoara, where authorities noted an 11.09% increase in family violence offenses during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the previous year.

Recent law enforcement activities have expanded to include emergency search operations. In Bacău, over 250 personnel, including police, gendarmes, firefighters, and volunteers, are utilizing thermal imaging and helicopters to search for a missing 4-year-old boy in Dofteana. Additionally, the Covasna Police Inspectorate has launched the ‘Choose Courage! Break the Silence!’ campaign to combat domestic violence.

On an international level, Romanian officials are strengthening security and anti-corruption cooperation. Interim Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu met with a delegation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to discuss optimizing protocols against organized crime, such as drug and human trafficking, and aligning border monitoring with advanced transatlantic technologies. Additionally, a Ministry of Justice delegation led by State Secretary Teodora Stoian participated in a seminar in Chișinău, Moldova, focusing on the transposition of EU Directive 2026/1021 and institutional corruption prevention.
