Death and tribute to former NHL player Ron Duguay

Overview

Former NHL player Ron Duguay has passed away at the age of 69 following a battle with Stage 4 colon cancer. The news was announced on October 22, 2026, by his family and his longtime companion, Sarah Palin, who expressed her grief on social media, stating, ‘It’s with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now.’

Duguay was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in late 2024. The disease spread to his liver, resulting in complications such as internal bleeding, ulcers, and dehydration, which required multiple surgeries and treatment at City of Hope in Southern California. To manage the significant medical and travel costs associated with his treatment, his family had previously launched a fundraiser.

A prominent figure in New York Rangers history, Duguay was selected 13th overall in the 1977 NHL Draft. He played 12 NHL seasons and recorded 620 career points across 864 games, including six seasons with the Rangers. During his tenure in New York, he helped the team reach the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings. Beyond his playing career, he was known for his charisma and served as a television analyst for the MSG Network from 2007 to 2018.

The New York Rangers organization released a statement mourning his loss, describing him as ‘one of the most popular players in franchise history’ and noting that his ‘skill, tenacity, and charisma earned him the admiration of all New Yorkers.’ Following his death, the Rangers held a tribute at Madison Square Garden, which included a moment of silence and a display of his image on the Jumbotron. His children, Shay, Amber, and Noah, and Sarah Palin were in attendance for the honor.
