Sanitation expansion in Mato Grosso do Sul

Overview

Sanitation coverage in southern Mato Grosso do Sul reached an average of 81.12% as of September. Several municipalities are nearing or have already exceeded the 90% target set by the national sanitation legal framework for 2033.

High-performing cities include Japorã at 99%, Nova Andradina at 98.26%, Itaquiraí at 97.12%, Sete Quedas at 93.92%, Novo Horizonte do Sul at 93.52%, Juti at 92.70%, and Dourados at 92.05%. This expansion is being driven by investments from Sanesul and a public-private partnership with Ambiental MS Pantanal, supporting Governor Eduardo Riedel’s priority to accelerate national sanitation goals.

As of September 2026, six municipalities in the Três Lagoas region—Bataguassu, Brasilândia, Ribas do Rio Pardo, Santa Rita do Pardo, Selvíria, and Três Lagoas—have achieved 99% sewage coverage. The high coverage rates in Três Lagoas and Ribas do Rio Pardo are particularly notable as they are located within the ‘Vale da Celulose’, a region undergoing significant industrial expansion.

In the Ponta Porã region, six of seven municipalities have exceeded national targets. Ponta Porã, Paranhos, and Laguna Carapã have reached 99% coverage, followed by Aral Moreira at 98.51%, Antônio João at 97.47%, and Amambai at 93.18%. Coronel Sapucaia reported 79.69%. Sanesul CEO Renato Marcílio stated these investments “protect public health, preserve environmental assets, and support regional economic development and growth.”

Additionally, Bonito and Caracol reached 99% sewage coverage, significantly exceeding the Brazilian national average of 56.7%. In Bonito, a R$ 1.5 million sewage pumping station project has been contracted for the Solar dos Lagos I neighborhood and Rua Nossa Senhora Aparecida, with a nine-month timeline. Efforts continue to extend networks to the Parque das Palmeiras and Palmeira Velha neighborhoods.
