Security incidents involving Russian interests in Poland

Overview

Polish authorities have addressed several separate incidents involving Russian interests. In October 2026, the Internal Security Agency announced the detention of a second suspect, Mahmud A., a 22-year-old Georgian citizen, in connection with the June murder of Russian critic Robert Kuzovkov in Biała Podlaska. The victim, also known as Semion Skrepecki, was shot five times. Mahmud A. is accused of complicity in the murder by assisting the primary suspect, Elnur A., and faces additional charges for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Separately, police in Świdnica detained 55-year-old Russian national Aleksander Maszowiec on suspicion of espionage. He was observed photographing railway crossings and communication facilities using professional equipment. Forensic examination of seized electronic devices revealed hundreds of thousands of files containing imagery of strategic transport and communication hubs across Poland and other countries. Maszowiec is charged under Article 130, paragraph 1 of the Polish Penal Code for activities on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. While a court has ordered him to be held in custody for three months, his sister, Ksenia Suchorukowa, has disputed the allegations, calling them “absurd and terrifying” and stating that photographing trains and aircraft is a long-standing hobby. In a further development, the Internal Security Agency arrested six individuals suspected of spying for Russia and supplying the Russian military with strategic components. The group consists of five Polish citizens, aged 25 to 52, and a 37-year-old Russian national. Between October 21 and November 2, 2026, authorities conducted searches at 21 locations across the Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian, and Greater Poland voivodeships. The group allegedly operated from June 2023 until December 2025, moving materials such as shell casings and projectiles through Poland, Lithuania, and Russia using vehicles with hidden compartments. Four suspects, including the Russian national, face espionage charges and have been placed in three-month investigative detention.
